What if the price moved up 10%?

At ₦5,500 a sale, break-even moves to 480 sales and your margin of safety becomes 47%.

Each sale

  • Cost per sale₦3,000
  • Margin₦2,000

How we worked it out

Every sale contributes ₦2,000 towards fixed costs once its own cost of ₦3,000 is paid. Fixed costs of ₦1,200,000 a month divided by that margin gives 600 sales, or ₦3,000,000 of revenue, before the first naira of profit.

Assumptions and limits (4)
  • One product, or an average sale, with a constant price and cost per sale.
  • Fixed costs stay the same whatever you sell in the month.
  • The price what-if assumes you keep the same number of sales at the new price.
  • Runway uses this month's loss as the burn rate and ignores receivables, payables and seasonality.

Why break-even matters

Break-even is the point where sales cover costs. Below it every month costs you money; above it every extra sale is profit. Knowing the number tells you how much room you have, which price changes are safe, and when a slow month becomes a crisis.

Margin of safety

The gap between your current sales and break-even, as a share of sales. A 30% margin of safety means sales can fall by nearly a third before you stop covering costs. Lenders and investors read this number closely.

From an estimate to a forecast

Real businesses have more than one product, seasonal sales and costs that step up as they grow. Our finance advisory team builds budgets, forecasts and cash plans on your actual numbers, and our business advisory team turns them into a plan a bank will read.
