Your generator has a carbon footprint. Here is how to measure it

Diesel and petrol generators are most Nigerian businesses' largest source of emissions. Measuring them is simpler than it sounds.

Lenders, large customers and regulators are starting to ask businesses about their emissions. For most Nigerian firms, the biggest number comes from one place: the generator.

The two figures you need

You only need your yearly fuel use and your grid electricity:

  • Diesel: each litre burned releases about 2.7 kg of CO₂.
  • Petrol: each litre releases about 2.3 kg of CO₂.
  • Grid electricity: each kWh is about 0.395 kg of CO₂ in Nigeria.

Fuel you burn yourself (generators, company vehicles) is Scope 1. Electricity you buy is Scope 2.

A worked example

A shop that buys 200 litres of diesel a month uses 2,400 litres a year. That is about 6.5 tonnes of CO₂. Add 6,000 kWh of grid power (about 2.4 tonnes) and the total is close to 9 tonnes a year.

Why it matters now

Sustainability reporting under IFRS S1 and S2 is being phased in for Nigerian public interest entities, and their suppliers will be asked for data. Knowing your number early puts you ahead.

The quickest wins

Generator hours are usually the lever. Solar for daytime loads, better maintenance and switching to grid when it is available all cut fuel bills and emissions together.
